Just as no two living beings are exactly alike, each block of Serpentinoscisto is distinctly unique.
Unrivalled physical and mechanical properties such as outstanding hardness, low water absorption and superior strength, combined with its exceptional beauty, ensure that Serpentinoscisto stands out from the crowd.
Our quarry is called Agnisci, from the dialect word “Agnisc”, which refers to the black alder trees that grow in the area.
The quarry is situated on a promontory at 1,480 alt. and is the oldest open-air quarry for serpentine schist in the Valmalenco valley. The quarry has been exploited since the 19th century and is known for its high quality products. Stone from the Agnisci quarry presents very even foliations, which makes it possible to produce exceptionally large, thin split-face slabs.
We are direct descendants of the first quarrymen to work the deposit. Our families have run the quarry continuously since it opened.
From an early age we learned to love this stone. As youngsters, we were mesmerised by the rhythmic fall of the old quarrymen’s chisels and the music produced by the stone. Fascinated, we impatiently awaited the time when we could brandish the fine iron wedges ourselves and, under the watchful eye of the old giuelèe, we gradually came to understand their unique philosophy on life.
We have not forgotten our roots and are proud of the part we have played in an epic journey spanning 11 centuries.
