The roof contributes majorly to the overall harmony and beauty of a building. As its crowning feature, the roof is fundamental to the building’s lines and sense of perspective. It determines the building’s ability to age, and makes an important contribution to the comfort of its inhabitants. Valmalenco Serpentinoscisto Piodas constitute a viable roofing option that will stand the test of time, as well as lending character and value to any building.
Roofs covered in Piodas should ideally have a 35% pitch as installation on steeper roofs is somewhat more difficult and roofs with a pitch less than 30% require extremely large Piodas.
To ensure that the Piodas remain firmly in place over time, it is recommended that they be nailed to decking constructed in spruce.
Guttering and flashings should be fitted tightly so as to create an effective watertight seal.
Snow guards are nailed to the decking and underlying joists to prevent the snowy mantle from sliding down the roof.
When the Piodas arrive on the worksite they still have two sawn ends that the roof layer chips off before laying so that the entire visible surface presents a split finish.
Pioda roofs do not require on-going general maintenance.
Laying patterns
Three main laying patterns are used, the technique for which is essentially the same.
A corsi: the visual effect created by this laying pattern is extremely symmetrical, with each consecutive row of Piodas being perfectly parallel to the previous row.
A semicorsi: the roof layer lines up the Piodas on sight in relatively even rows. The resulting effect is slightly undulated and very appealing to the eye.
A mosaico: Piodas of varying lengths (up to 85 cm) are laid according to the roof layer’s sense of artistry.
